The psychological determinants of motherhood and life orientations among female medical students

Keywords: life orientations, medical students, motherhood

Abstract

Background. Modern university students constitute a special category of population, having potential for solving demographic problems in society. Therefore, value orientations, family values, and attitudes towards parenthood are of particular relevance. Aim: this paper aims to identify psychological determinants of motherhood and value orientations among college students depending on year of study. Materials and methods. A survey of 150 reproductive-age female students (18 to 25 years) studying at a medical university was conducted. The Childbirth Inventory (M.N. Rodstein) was applied to identify psychological determinants of motherhood, while the Noetic Orientations Test (D.A. Leontev) was used to analyze value orientations. The study was carried out through face-to-face survey interviews. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS Statistics program. Results. Life orientations of female students are mostly associated with academic and career achievement. However, the importance of the family and psychological readiness for childbirth remain underestimated, potentially posing challenges in building interpersonal relationships. Considering these findings, it is crucial to cultivate orientations towards family, motherhood, and adequate assessment of parental role among female college students. Conclusion. The observed relatively low level of readiness for childbirth and parenthood underscores the necessity for implementing a comprehensive program aimed at promoting family values and motherhood.
