The relationship between victimization and protective coping behavior in adolescence
Abstract
Background. The transformations occurring in modern Russian society are a prerequisite for the growing interest among scholars in various social aspects of human life at different age periods. Reflecting this trend, one contemporary area of study focuses on the analysis of victim behavior and protective coping behaviors in adolescence. Aims. This study aimed to compare victim behavior and protective coping behaviors in 6th- and 8th-grade students. Materials and methods. The empirical study was conducted with a sample of adolescents from public schools in various Russian regions. The study involved 141 adolescent students (n = 70 6th-graders, n = 71 8th-graders). The following psychodiagnostic tools were used: the Propensity for Victim Behavior Questionnaire (O. Andronnikova); the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (R. Lazarus); the Life Style Index (R. Plutchik); and the Coping Strategies Indicator (J. Amirkhan). Results. In the sample of 6th- and 8th-graders, nineteen correlations were identified, encompassing both statistically significant relationships and those at the level of a trend. The most prominent characteristic of victim behavior among 6th-graders was passive victim behavior. For 8th-graders, the characteristic with the greatest number of correlations to protective coping behavior parameters was initiative victim behavior. The group of 6th-graders was less likely to use conscious coping strategies such as Seeking Social Support and Escape-Avoidance and more frequently employed unconscious methods for problem-solving. In contrast, 8th-graders made greater use of a variety of coping strategies, including: Seeking Social Support, Escape-Avoidance, Distancing, Planful Problem-Solving, Self-Control, Acceptance of Responsibility, and Confrontation. Conclusion. Understanding the relationship between victim behavior and protective coping behaviors in adolescents of different age periods is significant for the practice of school psychological services and the implementation of psychological and pedagogical measures aimed at preventing victim behavior and activating coping resources.
