Features of existential motivations in obese patients after bariatric surgery

Abstract

Introduction. The growing number of obese patients and the rapid increase in the number of bariatric surgeries performed determines the relevance of the topic. The study is aimed at studying the psychological characteristics of patients with grade 2 and 3 obesity who have undergone bariatric surgery. This will reveal the relationship between fundamental motivations, components of self-esteem and situational components such as depression and anxiety. Aims. To identify the features of existential motivations in patients after bariatric surgery. Materials and methods. 61 patients with diagnoses of “Obesity of the 2nd degree” and “Obesity of the 3rd degree” who underwent bariatric surgical treatment participated in the testing.
The average age of the subjects was 45.8 ± 7.4 years, all test participants signed an informed consent. The following methods were used: the test of existential motivations, the questionnaire of self-attitude /self-esteem, the hospital scale of anxiety and depression “HADS”. Results. According to the scales “Fundamental trust”, “Expected attitude from others”, “Self-esteem”, “Autosympathy”, the largest number of low values were revealed, which emphasizes the need to correct basic beliefs and behavioral strategies in difficult life situations. Conclusion. A significant negative effect of depression and anxiety on more stable personal structures (fundamental motivations, components of self-esteem) was revealed. There were positive correlations between the components of self-esteem and existential motivations, in particular, fundamental trust and self-esteem, fundamental self-worth and self-interest, meaning of life and autosympathy, self-esteem, global self-attitude, which is an indicator of the impact on the realization of fundamental motivations.
