Psychological training of palliative care specialists: Russian and foreign practice
Abstract
Introduction. This comprehensive review presents the results of meta-analyses and systematic literature reviews about palliative care development and staff training strategies, including psychological skill training. Aim: this study aims to provide insights into theoretical and practical aspects of psychological training for palliative care specialists. Materials and methods. This study presents a thorough analysis of 155 scholarly sources, including 100 international authors, over the period of 2014–2024. For this literature review, 45 sources were meticulously selected, complemented by five dissertations and three monographs. The bibliographic databases eLibrary and PubMed served for source identification and analysis. Results. Through an exhaustive examination of theoretical and practical aspects of psychological training for palliative care specialists, a multiparadigm model was analyzed, integrating the personal characteristics of specialists, their professional skills, and communication abilities. The significance of investigating these attributes through comprehensive analytical synthetic approaches within various psychological frameworks was underscored. A discernible disparity in palliative care training was identified, particularly in regards to enhanced focus on fostering empathy, compassion, and communication skills among medical professionals, with a lack of research in hospice nursing, palliative care staff, and nursing unit staff.
Conclusion. The analysis of Russian and international literature demonstrates a growing trend towards the development of standardized methodologies for enhancing the psychological skills of palliative care specialists. However, insufficient attention is paid to the individual characteristics of these specialists, which significantly influence their intrinsic readiness to provide psychological support to palliative patients and their relatives. In Russia, neither psychological assessments nor consultations are conducted during the hiring process for palliative care specialists. Consequently, multidimensional models of research focusing on professionally critical psychological skills are deemed essential.
