Abstract

Introduction: Psychogenic overeating is an eating disorder in which food is used as a maladaptive coping strategy for negative emotions. A key mechanism underlying this disorder is a disruption of emotional self-regulation – the ability to manage one’s own emotional states. A thorough study of emotional self-regulation is essential for developing effective targeted psychological intervention programs. Aims: this paper provides a review of theoretical approaches to emotional self-regulation in individuals with psychogenic overeating for further qualitative research. Theoretical Basis: this study presents a systematic search and qualitative synthesis of Russian and international literature on emotional self-regulation in psychogenic overeating from the eLibrary, PubMed, and CyberLeninka electronic databases. Results: a review of scientific concepts on psychogenic overeating as an eating disorder was conducted. A total of 38 Russian and international publications were analyzed. The study demonstrated that the central deficit in this disorder is a disruption of emotional self-regulation, primarily cognitive reappraisal, as well as reduced awareness of emotional states (alexithymia). The main approaches to studying emotional self-regulation in individuals with psychogenic overeating were reviewed. Conclusion: this study justifies the key role of emotional self-regulation in psychogenic overeating. While international authors consider emotional self-regulation within the cognitive-behavioral framework, the Russian theory of relationships proposed by V. Myasishchev offers a more profound three-component model (encompassing cognitive, emotional, and motivational-volitional dimensions), thereby expanding the understanding of this phenomenon. Future research will focus on developing methods to enhance self-regulation within comprehensive psychological correction.
